Dr. Kieran Walsh

Dr Kieran Walsh is Clinical Director at BMJ. He is the clinical lead of the medical education and clinical decision support products at BMJ. He has a vast amount of experience in online medical education, clinical decision support, face to face delivery of medical education, and both summative and formative assessment. He has published over 200 papers in biomedical literature and has written four books: the first and only book on cost effectiveness in medical education; a dictionary of quotations in medical education; a history of medical education in 100 images; and the Oxford Textbook of Medical Education. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators, and Adjunct Associate Professor at Monash University. In the past he has worked as a hospital doctor specialising in General Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine.

    Understanding different types of Diabetes - Approach, Evaluation, diagnostic testing and differential management of different types of Diabetes.
  2. Role of Nutrition counselling
    Understanding carbohydrate counting, and making informed dietary choices to manage blood sugar levels effectively. Acquire practical skills in designing diabetes-friendly meal plans for people with diabetes
  3. Lifestyle modification
    Including Physical Activity and Exercise Management. Learn how to tailor plans for individuals with diabetes, focusing on safe and effective workout routines that help control blood sugar while considering potential complications, concept of DMSE
  4. Medical management
    Approach, use of antidiabetic drugs, insulin and other management options targeting multifactorial approach targeting reduction of the risk of Diabetes complications, practical approach in management in special situations like pregnancy, elderly, CKD etc. Update yourself on recent advances in this area.
  5. Insulin Administration
    Gain hands-on experience in administering insulin through different methods (injections, pens, and pumps), ensuring accurate dosing and proper injection techniques. Understand the clinical application of different types of Insulin and regimens.
  6. Blood Glucose Monitoring
    Develop proficiency in using various blood glucose monitoring devices, interpreting results, and understanding the significance of different readings.
  7. Screening and Preventing Complications
    Understand from experts on screening and management of Diabetic retinopathy, Diabetic Nephropathy, Diabetic neuropathy, Diabetic foot, atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases etc. Engage in interactive diabetes-related complications scenarios, such as hypo/hyperglycemia, Diabetic ketoacidosis etc. Update your skills on foot care and wound management.

At the end of this course the candidate will be able to:
